Kneeling explores the complicated notion of service. Central to this piece is the shoeshine chair in which people are often elevated, much like a throne, while someone else takes care of their shoes. For the moment, while getting one’s shoes shined, one feels elevated and taken care of. Ultimately however, the act of service to others whether in religion or in regular society, elevates both the served and the one who serves. It can be intimate, ordinary and profound at the same time.
